Theology aside, I started thinking about something WAYYY off in left field the other day and I thought you would be interested in the result. You see, I have been giving some serious thought about my job and about what other kinds of jobs I could do to make sure that I am able to take care of you and Mommy as well as you deserve to be. Then, I started thinking about what I was wanting...a job or a cool job title. The two are very different. How? Like this:
The job title is what you paint on your door. It's the part you can make the name plate as pretty and as delightful-looking as you want. The job, on the other hand, is what goes on behind the door. It is often messy, difficult, and often has very little to do with what is painted on the door.
At the end of this, it occurred to me that I have always wanted cool titles. And to my credit, I have already had some very cool titles:
- Teacher's Assistant
- Teacher
- Principal
- Sensei
- Junior Instructional Designer
- Author
- Artist
- Illustrator
- Volunteer
- Donor
- Mentor
- Coach
I am shooting for some more titles, too:
- Master
- Senior Instructional Designer
- Doctor
- Creative Director
- Snowboard Instructor
- Provost (of anything, really...it is among the coolest sounding titles)
Why has this mattered to me? I guess that I have wanted, like Adam, to have power over those things I can name. It's fun to write on business cards.
The point of telling you all of this is that, this weekend, for whatever reason, I realized that the only name that matters is one that you have given me:
- Daddy
It's the only name that has ever given me goosebumps when I hear it. It's the only one that's free but also the only one that has any real value. It can't be given or taken. It will always mean me to you and you to me. It's the only name that I have never put onto a list to be checked off but it's the only one I will never erase. It's the only one I have ever known to be true even if I am still trying to understand what it truly means.
Sadly, you still don't make any money for getting a gig as a Daddy (or a Mommy, for that matter...and I think a Mommy definitely should...it's a lot of work), so I am going to have to wrap up and get to sleep so I can go to work in the morning. The sooner I do that, the sooner I can come home and get down to the business of seeing you smile!!
Love you!
Daddy.
